Glossary of Terms Relating To The Private Jet Charter Industry

Air Charter Broker:
An air charter broker acts as your agent when arranging travel on business jets. When dealing with air charter brokers and related service providers on your behalf, the broker represents your interests and acts as a flight coordinator. The broker begins work at the initial planning stages of a flight and continues his involvement through the conclusion of the arranged travel.

Airway Distance:
Airplanes rarely go in an exact straight line while flying as air traffic control and navigation will require variations in published routes. The actual distance flown is the airway distance. The different between airway (actual) distance and the straight line different is usually between 5-9%.

ARO:
Staffed by the FAA, the Airport Reservation Office, or ARO, allocates reservations for take-offs and landings to unscheduled aircraft in specific airports. At the JFK, LGA, EWR, DCA, and ORD these allocations to land or take-off are rare and granted 48 hours in advance. The arrangements are offered on a “first-come” basis meaning travel to these select airports is challenging for many private jets.

Block Rates:
When scheduling large amounts of air travel in advance with a particular company, block rates are prearranged contract rates often lower than standard fares.

Block Speed:
The block speed is the average speed computed over the distance from block-to-block. In most cases, this means from one gate to another gate at two airports.

Certificate:
A certificate is a license issued by the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) to carry passengers in the general public for hire. This is also referred to a ticket or a Part 135 license.

Commuter Operator:
A commuter operator is an airline that operates regionally and is scheduled. In most cases, a commuter operator is an operator with the fleet capacity to be available for charter as not all commuter airlines charter planes due to limitations in aircraft and flight crew availably.

Corporate Operator:
A corporate operator is a flight company that has earned FAA Part 135 certificate certifying that company to carry passengers for compensation.

Cruise Speed:
Cruise speed is the normal rate of travel at a specific altitude once an aircraft has completed it’s climb and is en route to it’s destination.
